Finding Stillness in the Festive Season: Yoga & Ayurveda for Balance and Self-Care

Finding Stillness in the Festive Season: Yoga & Ayurveda for Balance and Self-Care

Reading time: 5-10 mins

At Mylk & Butter.Co, we believe in gathering voices that uplift, empower, and inspire.

We're honored to introduce Fay Mohitian - a beautiful artist and yoga teacher whose work embodies mindful presence. I've invited her to share her wisdom on finding moments of stillness amid the busyness of the approaching festive season, offering gentle guidance for anyone searching for a softer, more intentional way to close the year.

December often arrives with a beautiful mix of excitement and overwhelm — gatherings, planning, gift-wrapping, and long to-do lists that never seem to end. In the midst of it all, I find myself craving stillness — those slow moments where I can take a deep breath, sip my chai, and come back to myself.

Both Yoga and Ayurveda remind us that life is about balance. We’re constantly moving between activity and rest, energy and surrender. And the festive season is the perfect time to practice finding harmony — not through doing more, but by softening into sattva.

Understanding Sattva — The Quality of Clarity and Calm

In yogic philosophy, there are three gunas — or energies — that influence everything we do:

  • Sattva represents balance, purity, and harmony. It’s the peaceful energy that makes us feel clear, joyful, and content.

  • Rajas is activity, drive, and movement — the spark that gets things done but can also make us restless.

  • Tamas is heaviness or inertia — the need for rest, but too much of it can make us feel dull or unmotivated.

During the festive season, rajas often take over — our minds race, our schedules fill, and we can lose connection to our inner calm. Cultivating sattva means intentionally creating space to slow down, breathe, and return to what truly matters.

The Ayurvedic Lens — Understanding the Doshas

In Ayurveda, we all have a unique blend of three energies known as doshas:

  • Vata (air + space): light, quick, and creative energy. When unbalanced, it causes anxiety or restlessness.

  • Pitta (fire + water): passionate, focused, and determined. Too much of it leads to irritability, burnout, or overheating — both physically and emotionally.

  • Kapha (earth + water): stable, calm, and nurturing. Out of balance, it can turn into sluggishness or attachment.

December in Australia carries the warmth and intensity of Pitta energy — long days, social plans, and heightened emotions. To balance this fiery season, we need cooling, grounding, and nourishing rituals that soothe our body and mind.

My Festive Season Rituals

When life gets busy, I love to create simple moments of pause. My day often begins — or ends — with soft music, followed by dry brushing to awaken the body and support the lymphatic system. Then, a warm shower and self-massage using Mylk & Butter Co’.s Signature Les Sensualles Organic Botanical Body & Massage Oil — one of my favourite rituals that makes me feel grounded and nurtured. I use a touch of their Luminous hair oil and Lumiere Face Oil too, adding a luxurious glow that feels like self-love in its purest form.

A tidy home also brings me a sense of calm — it’s as if clearing the space allows me to breathe more freely. I make a cup of chai, sit quietly with my journal or iPad, and either paint for Petite Prints Society Art Club, read, or simply reflect.

December is also my time to write plans for the new year — not rigid resolutions, but gentle intentions: books I’d love to read, places I want to see, things that would bring me joy. It’s a ritual of vision and gratitude rather than pressure.

Yoga and Breath for the Busy Season

When my mind feels scattered, I turn to Yin or Restorative Yoga — long, supported poses that melt tension and help me reconnect with stillness. Even ten minutes can make a difference.

Breathwork practices like Nadi Shodhana (alternate-nostril breathing) or Sheetali Pranayama (cooling breath) are wonderful for balancing Pitta energy, calming the nervous system, and restoring focus.

If I can do nothing else, I simply pause — one deep breath, one slow exhale — to remind myself that presence is always available.

A Moment to Pause

The festive season is meant to be joyful, but it’s also a time to rest, reflect, and realign. I created my podcast, Moment to Pause, as a gentle reminder to do just that — to find beauty in slowing down, to honor life’s quiet moments, and to reconnect with ourselves in the middle of it all.

So as you move through this season, I invite you to carve out your own rituals of stillness. Light a candle, sip your tea slowly, stretch gently, or simply take a breath. Remember — balance doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly. It means showing up for yourself with care, kindness, and a little softness in your heart.
